Once your payment clears, you’ll get your insurance certificate information by email – or in the mail, if you don’t have an email address or request it. Some landlords may ask to see this as proof of your insurance. You’ll also want to store it in a safe place in case you need to make a claim.

If you live in a building where tenant insurance is mandatory, you’ll need to renew your coverage every year and may need to show the new certificate to your landlord. Don’t worry – you’ll be sent notice in advance.

Finally, keep receipts and records (make, model, where and when purchased and the price) of your purchased belongings, particularly more expensive items. In the event of a disaster, photographs are also very helpful in proving your claim. Marsh Canada offers some helpful tips on creating an inventory of your belongings.
